Olongapo is a city in the Southwestern part of Luzons, the largest island of the Philippines. The city is close to the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, which, until 1992, was a US marine base. The people there live in deprived conditions and work hard for their livelihood.

Our micro entrepreneur Marylyn lives there as well, together with her husband and five children, aged 1 – 11, in a small bungalow. Some of the children already go to school, which is very important to both parents.

In order to afford a good education despite the deprivation, both parents work very hard. Marylyn’s husband Javier works on a construction site six days a week. Marylyn runs her own shop, where she sells supplies of daily life. Thanks to a microcredit of approximately 90€, she was able to expand her store and increase the variety of products offered. As does her husband’s job, the small shop plays an important role for the family. Not only does it supply the family with a solid daily income, it also allows the children to receive a good education.
